Finding Our ‘Ohana – Children’s Book Review (1 comment)

Take a delightful and magical journey as Lani and Maleko search for and find their ‘Ohana (family).  While you travel along with them, discover some of Hawai’i's favorite local foods, too! Author, Jerilyn Ito has just published her first children’s Book, Finding Our ‘Ohana, in February 2010. I am so excited to review this book for Jerilyn because I know that she has been working really hard to get this book published.

Finding Our ‘Ohana is a picture storybook for ages 6-8, but I will say that my 2 year old enjoyed the pictures and the story as well. There were some words and phrases that are more appropriate for older children but the main storyline could be applicable to any age. Luci loved reading about the different kinds of Hawaiian foods that Jerilyn describes in her book and the lovable characters as well. We talked about the Tutu (Grandma) in the story and Luci couldn’t stop talking about her purple dress. I feel that as Luci ages this book will grow with her. She will then learn about  how children want to be part of a family and it will give her an opportunity to learn about other cultures even within the United States.

Finding Our ‘Ohana also teaches children a great lesson about being grateful for the things they have. Many children in our country right now are going without food and a family to love them everyday. For the kids who are fortunate enough to have these things, this book can help them understand that there are other kids out there that need nourishment both for their bodies and their hearts. So pick up this book and share this great magical journey with your kids.
