My Son, the Holiday Hog! (2 comments)

Every since the day he was born, Jacob has wanted the world to know that being the second child does not mean that he is second in line. Pushing his way into this world on Thanksgiving meant changing our plans for the holiday. I was going to host Turkey Day at our house because I was still a week and an half away from my due date and had no intentions of going to the hospital to deliver my little man. Well, he had a whole other plan in mind. He was going to make his entrance on a holiday whether we had plans or not.

Same goes for Christmas. What I thought was going to be a routine one month checkup at the pediatrician turned into an “unexpected” trip to Children’s Hospital. I put that in quotes cause in the back of my mind, I was certain that if he got sick that we would probably end up at the hospital because he is so young.

This past week at our house had been goop-y, snotty, yucky and all around vomitt-y. Luci had gotten sick late Thursday night and I knew that I was in for a rough week when she was throwing up for the next day and an half. My normally rambunctious toddler was holed up on the couch for most of the following weekend. Dora and Diego became our best friends while Mommy tended to her and the now congested Jake.

Jake was stuffy for the beginning of the week and then by Monday (when I took Luci to the doctor to get a prescription for amoxicilan), his breathing got a little worse. I told the doctor all about his ailments but neither of us were really concerned and both knew that he would be seeing him in a couple days.

Wednesday morning arrived (2 days before Christmas) and Jake and I were off to the doctor with a Christmas shopping date to boot. This is where the routine check up turned into a trip to the ER. Since Jake was having trouble breathing, Dr. Matt decided to do a breathing treatment for him at the office and after it really did no good, he told me to head on over to Children’s so they could check him out more thoroughly.

So off we went to the ER and several more breathing treatments later, he was admitted into the hospitals. His tests came back with a positive RSV and bronchiolitis which meant that we were probably going to have to stay in the hospital for a couple days so they could monitor his breathing more, open his lungs up with a breathing tube in order for him to get rid of this virus.

Traveling is out of the question now. We were all set to go see family in Toledo and Cleveland for the holiday so that more family members could meet our little guy but instead here I am sitting on the most comfortable (ha) hospital bed watching the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl (yeah, I’ve never heard of it either).

More updates to come tomorrow. On the plus side, the docs here at the hospital say that he is responding well to the oxygen that he is getting. Here’s to my Holiday Hog and a very boring New Year’s .

Wow Abbey, I’m sorry to hear that about your son. I hope he recovers quickly, as I’m sure you are aware that RSV is deadly for a newborn. Again, we have many things in common. My daughter and son were hospitalized for 2 weeks in August with RSV, and my daughter had pneumonia too! That is why I pulled them out of daycare (my son was only four months old and had only been in daycare a week) and I actually started Happy and Healthy Mom.Com in my son’s hospital room. It was a good thing too, because when they got out of the hospital, I lost my main job.

Anyway, sorry to make things about me, I was just trying to relate. Hang in there, as I know how hard it is to watch them putting tubes and needles into your little boy while he struggles to take full breaths. It can be quite unnerving, but he is in a safe place. Childrens’ hospitals are designed to deal with the individual needs of your baby and they will make sure he recovers completely before he gets out. I hope he’s being a trooper. I will be here for you during the stay as I know how cutoff to the world you feel while sleeping on the chairbeds, eating hospital food, and taking showers in the stalls with metal bars. My prayers are with you.
