Are you a soon-to-be mommy? New to mommy-hood? Or a veteran mommy looking for ways to make your life easier? Well, I’ve been all of those (currently in the last category now) and I wish I would have know most of the things I know now! I’m the friend everyone calls to ask mommy-related things when the answers aren’t obvious. Why? A couple of reasons. First, I’ve always been kind of a “educator” when it comes to my friends and family. If I know it, I try to help where I can. Second, my profession for the last 15 years or so has been in marketing/marketing research so I have a natural tendency to research and Google every issue/service/product down to the last detail. And, I’ve found that over the years, I keep getting the same questions asked over and over again by my friends/family. So when I was asked to write this guest blog article, I’ve decided to compile my answers to some of these questions to see if it might help any other new mommy’s out there! These are just my opinions and experiences, so don’t hold me to them!

Breastfeeding Help – yes, you should try it. No, it’s not instinctive. Most people have problems with it in the beginning. My advice is to find a lactation consultant in your area (before you get to the hospital to deliver.) Have their phone number ready and plan on calling them out to your house for an appointment a couple of days or a week after the baby is born. I breastfed my 2 kids for 15 months and 8 months respectively. And I still needed a consultant both times! Each baby is different. The consultants in the hospital help, but it’s better to get one out to your house after the baby is born so they can weigh the baby and give you advice in your “real world” setting. Give breastfeeding 3 weeks to work…that’s how long it usually takes mommy and baby to “learn” how to do it. (Your local La Leche League can also help!)

Swaddling – will save your life. Learn how to do it in the hospital from the nurses. The “Swaddle Me” blanket is great!

Need help registering? – get the “Baby Bargains” book. It comes out every year and is priceless. It tells you the 3 top items in every category to buy and which ones are the “best” buys based on price/value. Love it! FYI…when deciding on strollers, visit a nice store in your town where you can “sample” the strollers from well informed salespeople…then register with Babies R Us if they have the same one for a more affordable price.

Baby Sick? – always call the on-call doctor WHENEVER you need to, even if it’s 3am in the morning. That’s what they are there for. Don’t feel bad. I think I called about 10 times the first week I came home with the baby.

Baby Not Sleeping? – Best Baby Sleeping Book is “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child” by Marc Weissbluff. I’ve read them all…I’m not kidding. Don’t even bother buying any other book.

Reflux Baby? – if you think your baby has acid reflux, don’t waste a minute…call the best Pediatric Gastrointerologist and make an appointment. Tell them it’s an emergency and you need to come in ASAP. Your pediatrician will probably frown upon it or say it’s not necessary, but the specialists know best and it’s worth a visit to get the best care for your child! Email me for more info on this if you have questions. (info@babychickdesigns.com)

Lastly, I wanted to introduce my company and what we offer to soon-to-be, new, and veteran mommies. After struggling with finding artwork to decorate my little girl’s room…my mother, a seasoned artist painted some beautiful barnyard animal watercolors for us to hang in her room. I loved them so much that I told her we must find a way to make them available to the public at an affordable price! That is how Baby Chick Designs, Art for Little Ones was started.
