Being A Dad In A Mom’s World

My name is Jay Stueve. I am the owner of a company called Crazy Baby Clothing and I am a dad. I think my customers are often surprised when they discover that I’m not a mom. In a world of mommy bloggers and mom operated baby businesses, I am definitely a stand out.

I began my business over three years ago. At the time, I never thought that what I was pursuing was unusual for a dad. I used to play in bands and I consider myself, for a late thirty something guy, pretty hip. There was a lack of cool baby clothes in the market, so I figured that would be a fun business to start. Ultimately, I found out starting a baby clothing line was typically done by moms.

Moms write about babies and their clothing on their blogs. Moms are typically the shoppers of baby clothes. Moms are the ones buying gifts for baby showers. Moms are the ones who typically own baby clothes stores. When a customer calls and I happen to answer the phone I often get that confused moment of silence after my voice is heard. I think my customers expect to hear a woman’s voice on the other end.

So how does being a dad in a mom’s world work out? Surprisingly well. I think I bring a different perspective to the business just by being a dad. I think our products are different because I’m a dad. I know our website looks more “manly” because I’m a dad. It has that slightly testosterone infused look about it. Although, I’ve seriously considered changing the red stuff on our site to either pink or purple. Feel free to reply to this post on whether that’s a good idea or not.

I can say this. I find that all the moms I come in contact with are always a joy to talk to and work with. I believe the kindness that is inherent to moms is a wonderful thing and makes my job a true pleasure. I like being a dad in a moms world.
