A Natural Process that Just Keeps Giving!

Motherhood is always a wonderful exciting and ever entertaining journey.  Moms can talk endlessly about the love, meaning, challenges and bliss that becoming a mother has brought into their lives, not to mention talking proudly about their precious little treasures ;-)

I have found that for the typical career-corporate oriented woman, out to take by world by storm with their successes and accolades (like I used to be), motherhood is  something on the list of things to do, something that for now others do very well, and I have no clue about, or have feelings for….yet.  Nevertheless, when motherhood call upon us, not only is our world joyfully upside-down as it is for other moms, but also something fantastic takes place: it brings us back to earth, so to speak.  The simpler things in life have an incredible new meaning (like the exuberance a child’s smile can give us), and it truly makes us re-connect with our roots as we discover the wonderful journey that motherhood is.

As we learn, and find out the meanings of the different colors in baby’s diaper, or as we discern the implication of a specific cry (hunger, tiredness, etc.) we desperately need the guidance and support of other moms.  Free advice, caring help, and eagerness to lend a hand is never far as mothers are (thank God) willing to share their tidbits of success, and stories of what is to come.  But far more significant, I think, is the discovering within our inner circle the traditions and customs of where we come from.  Activities so ordinary and commonplace in some cultures, and completely out of this world for others, the beauty of the world itself!  Motherhood holds a sanctuary of very cool tips!  Take for example, how no children leave hospitals in Argentina until their heads have been shaven.  Still practiced in many non-Argentinean homes throughout Latin America, this guarantees a healthy full head of hair.

And then, further than the connection to our culture, the connection to our closest roots: our family, and out inner modus operandi.  In every home of my family, I always saw baby portraits, but never really knew the specifics that went into one.  Until my son was born, I didn’t bother noticing that all family babies posed with a cloth diaper and the same silver safety pins that had been passed around from Spain for centuries.  The same medallion sat somewhere in the photograph or painting along with yellow rose petals (to ensure beautiful friendships and strong family ties in the child’s life).

Then, I found out of the more practical tips that have been guarded and shared freely by all the moms in this family.  I knew that if you had trouble sleeping you could make an apple or lettuce infusion.  But now, I know cilantro infusions are the best for babies, and fool proof!    After having trouble with some pregnancy pneumonia, I was given the best home remedy ever: honey, lemon, ginger.  Simple, natural, and highly effective.  You just replace the honey with a sweet infusion (like cinnamon) for babies, and you still get a great result.

Another valuable tip was the burping method.  Instead of patting baby on the back, we sit her on our lap and gently make her upper body do a circle.  Works like a charm every time.

So, with all the magnificent, breathtaking moments, and unique love that we encounter from every angle with motherhood, comes more brilliant ways of enjoying life, and savoring the details that make us whole, as we re-evaluate our priorities and value our upbringing and the strong women in our lives who are super cool moms with exceptionally cool tips.
