Winter. The season holds so many emotions for me.  The trepidation as the cold approaches makes me want to stay inside, curl up under a blanket and fill myself with all the warmth I can contain…especially, Williams-SonomaHot Chocolate. Autumn ends and the colors fade in our outside world.

On the bright side, this is when fashion & style really come alive. Bring on the color and layers and all the heavy fabric!

When we think of winter fabrics, wool & velvet come to mind.  Maroon, olive, gold, silver, brown, deep warm colors to make us feel cozy.  For this season’s styles, I not only searched local artisan shops and craft shows, but I scoured websites like Etsy.com, where a collection of boutiques and home businesses worldwide sell their goods online.  I used a combination of fabrics with a variety of cuts, beading and folds to create one-of-a-kind, affordable hair accessories. These will make amazing gifts and stocking-stuffers for any girl of any age.  From infants to mothers and even grandmothers, you can either find or work directly with me to create a perfect accessory. My mom has sported many of my karma klipz & klapz at work. Gift sets make a beautiful presentation with matching accessories for mothers, daughters and sisters from the “We’re Twinz Kollection”.

The winter is when I no longer get inspiration and motivation through the outdoor environment. I’ve never liked the cold weather and I get bummed out by not being able to feel the summer sun. So that is when I must take control of my indoor environment, to make me feel comfortable and free to creatively express myself rather than freezing up and becoming lazy with the coldness (oh, I’ve done that and learned my lesson).

I light candles with bold scents like cinnamon and pumpkin spice. The fire is burning, and football is on. We spend more time in the kitchen as we bake oatmeal cookies and cook butternut squash soup. The music is playing. I need the music on…especially at night when I’m in my studio with my hot glue gun in hand. It helps mold my mood and in turn, changes my perception and how I wind up with some of my designs.

In these cold and darkwinter months, the lights shine from within as we embrace the holiday season. Christmas lights sparkle, menorahs flicker, and songs of faith and love fill the air. This is when spirituality across the globe arises stronger than ever. With the return of the holidays, we can look back on the past year and give to those with whom we want to share our love, energy and spirituality. The smallest token of appreciation goes so far and keeps our hearts and souls toasty and warm all winter long.

When you begin to think about all the things you can get your loved one for the holidays, remember that it doesn’t have to be about how much money you spend but rather about being heartfelt. When you give a gift that is handmade by a real person who puts their energy and love and passion into it, you are giving poetry and art and pure soul.  Those presents will have lasting effects that never fade.  So it is without hesitation when I highly suggest shopping on Etsy.com before thinking about shopping at major corporations with factory produced items.

You’ve made me miss winter even more than I already do! ;-) Here in Houston, the only sign of winter is that we get to turn the air conditioner off, maybe for about two months if we’re lucky. And what’s funny is that every house in Houston has a fireplace, and has absolutely no need for it!
