Making Sure Your Family is Protected with Health Insurance

As moms, we try to do all that we can to protect our families. Helping to provide our family with a safe environment to live, making sure everyone is well-fed, and providing our kids with all they need to succeed in school and extracurricular activities. But another important way that moms and parents in general can protect their families is making sure everyone in their family is covered under a health insurance plan. Although it is not mandatory like auto and home insurance are, having health insurance is just as important.

Without insurance, an unexpected hospitalization or even just a single trip to the ER can easily end up being thousands of dollars. An illness in the family can bring financial turmoil and bring a household into major debt. Insurance will help protect your family financially.

And with health care costs, it’s hard to budget for like other household expenses may be, such as utilities, mortgage payments, and food bills, which remain relatively consistent, and you can to a certain extent predict their costs. Health care costs are increasing and it’s virtually impossible to predict what your household medical bills will be in the future year as unexpected events occur. For instance, you can’t say if one of your children will get strep throat later this year or that one of them will break an arm playing sports at school. Not knowing what may happen is a little scary but at least having health insurance can give you greater peace of mind knowing that some of your medical expenses will be taken care of through your insurer. Any uninsured person can tell you the fear they are living in, hoping that they don’t get sick and require any medical attention. Of course you’ll still be trying to do everything you can to keep your family healthy and out of the hospital, but at least you won’t have that additional worry weighing you down every day. Plus, you’ll be thankful that you insured your family while they were still healthy, since you can run into major problems if you wait to try to get insurance after you or a family member becomes seriously ill or injured. Health insurance is one of those things you should not hold out for.

Health insurance isn’t only a benefit in the event of the unexpected. It also helps cover routine and preventative care so that you can further avoid the serious illnesses that end up costing more. For parents, regular tests like mammograms and colonoscopies can save lives since early detection is crucial. Regular check ups for children are important to their healthy growth and development. Oftentimes, people who are uninsured only have the option of visiting a doctor when things get really bad and an illness has progressed, making it more costly and dangerous for their recovery. People with insurance usually have a regular doctor that they visit and get better care when they need it.
