This afternoon we were all sitting on the deck in the backyard, hanging out and enjoying the nice weather. Luci was picking up sweet gum seeds and sticking them in a bucket. John was grilling up some brats and I was basking in the sun making sure Luci was being careful around the pool. This is a pasttime that we have done for the last several weeks now when the weather has been nice. Luci loves picking up all the twigs and seeds possible and I don’t think anything of it when she brings me a handful.
As you have probably figured this story goes south, real fast. I told Luci to go get more things to put into her bucket and she comes running back towards me with a rock. Now mind you, she is still in that phase were everything goes in her mouth. But I’m real quick on the uptake and can most always catch her before it even gets close. Well, I caught her once again before she had the “rock” in her mouth. As she got closer, I was confused as to where she found a little black rock as we don’t have those kinds of rocks in our back yard. So I had her put it down and I examined it even closer. I didn’t have to look for more than a second to realize that it most definitely was not a rock. GROSS! Yep, it was dog poop. Of course. So I’m screaming and shooing the poop away.
Now I’m on the search for more poop so that she doesn’t think to pick up anything else and all the while yelling for John to take her in the house and wash her hands. Since this whole process is taking more than a minute. I see out of the corner of my eye that the little scoundrel (Luci) is sticking her hands in her mouth and no doubtedly licking them. So my yelling gets louder and more persistant. I have to pick up the poops so that leaves only John to wash her hands. How she found the only black “rock” in our yard is beyond me. But let me tell you, if she put that in her mouth, I probably wouldn’t have the stomach to recall this situation. Note to self: be more diligent about picking up dog poop.
